Movie Review : Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

1

The Coopers … Ben (Carell), Kelly (Garner), Anthony (Minnette), Emily (Dorsey), Alexander (Oxenbould) and baby Trevor (Elise and Zoey Vargas) are just an average family trying to juggle work, life, school and kids. Young Alexander, feeling neglected and ignored by his almost perfect family, makes a midnight wish on his 12th birthday. He wishes that everyone would have a bad day, just like he usually does.

And so his wish comes true …..

Mum and Dad sleep in and so are rushed and frazzled from the get go. Mum has a book launch and Dad is off to an important job interview.

Emily is to star in her school play and comes down with a cold.

Anthony wakes with a huge pimple on his forehead, the day of his school prom.

Alexander is delighted!

The day trudges from bad to worse for everyone except Alexander but somewhere along the way, what he thought would be a perfect birthday triumph, starts to seem not so great as his family falls apart around him.

This movie is exactly what you expect it to be. A light hearted, fun, family friendly romp through a day where a pouty boy gets his wish but ultimately realises just what is important to him. There are no great surprises, no major plot twists and that is just fine with me.

Of course, the flip side of this is the movie drags a little in parts. There are no real new jokes but when a movie is aimed at the family market, does there need to be? I feel the whole ‘kids expect more these days’ thinking is a load of rubbish. Kids still giggle at naughty poo and wee jokes, they still love slime and yucky stuff and they still love seeing the school bully get his come uppance.

This movie is a solid one for the young Aussie Ed Oxenbould. His star is on the rise and rightly so. He is a very talented young man and I look forward to seeing him in the Aussie movie Paper Planes, which is due out soon

This is a nice little movie to help occupy the kids over the Christmas holidays. I loved that Alexander is obsessed with Australia and the appearance of a kangaroo with delight the kids.
