Movie Review : Guardians of the Galaxy

Be sure to get to your seats on time because the movie starts pre opening credits and you don’t want to miss these pivotal moments when the grieving boy Peter Quill aka Star Lord (Pratt) is abducted by aliens. The only possessions he has with him are his Walkman (hey it was 1988) and a mix tape made for him by his dying mother.

Thus the movie has a kick arse 70’s soundtrack …… which I downloaded almost immediately when I got home. Oh yeahhhhhh …..

Anyway, fast forward 26 years and Peter find himself in possession of a mysterious orb that the control-freak Overlord type bad guy Ronan (Pace) covets. Ronan sends assassin Gamora (Saldana) to retrieve the orb but Gamora has other plans.

During the assassination attempt, Rocket the genetically altered bounty hunter racoon (voiced by Cooper) discovers the bounty on Peter’s head. Together with his companion / muscle Groot the tree (voiced by Diesel), they try unsuccessfully to capture Peter. All 4 end up in jail and it is here they meet Drax the Destroyer (Bautista) a man whose grasp of the English language is….. quite literally (do you see what I did there?) ….. laugh out loud hilarious in parts.

This motley crew devises a plan, masterminded by the deviously genius Rocket the racoon, to break out of jail and save the universe. As you do.

With the opening scene of an 8 year old boy listening to 10cc’s Im not in Love on his walkman, you know you are in for an interesting ride. And wow …… this movie delivers. I admit, I was a bit worried because we had seen no less than 6 trailers over the last 6 months and I was very vocal about my concerns. But I need not have worried because Marvel has quite simply, done it again.

From the adorably goofy yet completely charming ‘hero’ Peter to the I-could-give-Loki-a-run-for-his-money bad guy Ronan, this movie is full of characters. In a universe that has no boundaries other than the writer’s imagination, we are treated to all manner of human and non human species.

And all the fun is not just for the main characters either. Watch for some real scene stealing zingers from the extras as well.

The CGI is spectacular, just as you would expect from a Marvel movie. Groot is amazingly emotive for a tree and yes they got Gamora’s green perfect…..she’s not sickly green and she’s not witchy green. Wow…..I’m going to have to rethink my green women are evil women theory now. But she is a trained assassin so hmmmmm 😉

This movie has it all. Action, fun, emotion, heart and even a touch of romance. It races along at breakneck speed and you had better keep up. You will laugh and laugh as you cheer for our heroes, but there is more than enough action and cool nerdy type things to place this mob alongside their (previously) more spectacular super hero breatheren.

The kids will love it but there is some mild coarse language so maybe this is not one our littlest super hero fans. A great date night movie…….look just a great movie for everyone. I have not had this much fun in a movie for a very long time. I WILL be going again.
