Three years after he quit stripping to establish his own furniture business and live in domestic bliss with his one true love, Mike (Tatum) is back. His furniture business is struggling and his relationship is kaput so it doesn’t take much convincing for Mike to go back on the road with his old team.
Speaking of the old team, all our favourites are back. Dallas went
off and won an Oscar overseas and The Kid who was rumoured to be a pain in the arse on the first movie set went with him. But all the really hot guys are still here.
The story is this …. the boys road trip for a few days to a male stripper convention in Myrtle Beach and encounter some stuff along the way.
Yep that’s it.
And it’s enough.
The script is flimsy and the plot was probably conceived on a paper napkin or three over a long, boozy lunch. But who cares. I certainly didn’t and neither does any other woman I have spoken to who has seen the movie. There is a lot less story but it is so funny in parts that you hardly notice.
I will admit, when I saw the trailer and saw Big Dick Richie (Manganiello) dancing in the convenience store, I inwardly cringed. I wondered if even I would be able to forgive what I was seeing. But when you watch the movie, and you see the context, and hear the song, and understand why he is dancing there, it is laugh out loud hilarious.
Perhaps the most significant thing about the movie is it’s respect and love for women. We see women of all shapes and sizes and while yes, I perhaps do feel they hammered home that point just one too many times, the underlying theme is these men are celebrating women and they are celebrating pleasing women. This was a revelation and if you see this movie for no other reason, then see it for this. Women who are all but invisible in most mainstream movies are on show and celebrated here.
Okay okay, I hear ya. The real reason we go see Magic Mike is for Channing. Channing Tatum and his dancing. I mean…..words fail me so I won’t even try.
Surprisingly enough, this is a character driven movie. As I mentioned before, the script is as flimsy as it could be but it’s the characters that matter. The men, the women they love, the women they want to love, the women they perform for and each other. This is a gold old-fashioned buddy road trip movie…..with some stripping thrown in.
Does it work? Yeah it sure does. Lured in by Channing’s Pony dance moves….. I will link it in below and if you have no idea what I mean then please move along ….. you will stay for the fun and the fantasy. So get the girls together, have some dinner and some wine and then go and see this movie. You will not regret it and well …….
