The first thing you must know is this movie is based on an extremely successful gaming franchise. Sounds familiar huh? You betcha 😉
Tobey (Paul) has inherited his father’s struggling mechanic’s business. He works with his best friends Benny (Mescudi), Finn (Malek), Joe (Rodriguez) and Pete (Gilbertson) and they are happiest building and racing street cars. As he is desperate for money, he agrees to build a very expensive car for local bad guy turned smarmy, dodgy businessman Dino (Cooper). Oh and Dino also dates Tobey’s ex girlfriend Anita (Johnson) so it’s a very bitter pill to swallow. But he has little choice as the business is one bank visit away from foreclosure.
Tobey and Dino will split the profits once the car is sold. All good.
When Tobey and Pete deliver the finished product, Dino tempts them into racing some quite spectacular cars that are not even legal in the US. During the race, Pete is killed and Tobey ends up doing time. Fast forward 2 years and Tobey is out of jail and looking for revenge. He is also looking for money and has just 48 hours to cross from the east to west coast to enter a big money street race.
And it’s on …..
Not for one single second did I ever think I was going to watch a movie that would inspire me…. or change me….or provoke deep and thoughtful conversations with my family, colleagues or other interweb geeks. I expected cars and racing and crashes and clever tricks and stunts and maybe a love interest for our hero. Well we got 2 love interests as it turns out. The disarmingly perky and adorable Julie (Poots) and the dull as dishwater Anita.
(On a side note…..Johnson is the woman who is playing the lead in Fifty Shades of Rubbish err Grey? Laughs and laughs and laughs and laughs …… Ohhhhhhhhhh I cant wait now! It’s going to be even more of a spectacular failure than even I had expected. Bring on February 14 2015. Okay….. I will stop sniggering now …..)
So what did Need for Speed deliver? We got cars and racing and stunts and a love interest for our hero.
This movie is nothing more and nothing less than what you expect it to be. It has an adequate script, some pretty amazing stunts that I have no idea if they are even possible but I hazard a guess……ummmm nope. The acting is good and Paul holds it all together nicely. No doubt he is trading on his Breaking Bad success…… and yes I am the only person in the world who has not watched the series…… and why wouldnt he.
I cannot help but compare it to the outrageously successful Fast and Furious franchise and while it lacks the grunt of the F&F movies, it’s not too bad at all. It will be popular with F&F fans, Breaking Bad fans and the fast car / action movie types.
I really enjoyed this movie. I have no idea why but I did. It is highly forgettable and yet highly entertaining. It’s just good fun.
Now…..who can lend me the Breaking Bad box set?
