Movie Review : Trainwreck

Amy Schumer is an extremely talented stand up comedian with a hugely successful TV career and so a movie was only a matter of time. With Judd Apatow taking the directing reins and Amy writing and drawing from many of her own experiences, this was always going to be a raunchy, bawdy romp.

Opening with a flashback to a young Amy and her sister Kim being told by their father why he was divorcing their mother, the girls are told to repeat the line that ‘monogamy isn’t realistic’. Kim (Larson) grows up to marry the very nice and sensible Tom (Bisbiglia), even taking on his bratty son as her own.

Amy on the other hand, takes her father’s advice to heart and moves from one lover to the next with all the ease of a modern, confident young woman. These quick scenes are laugh out loud funny as we watch a sexually aggressive female take what she wants.

She does kind of try to settle down briefly with the handsome but dumb as bricks Steven (Cena). Now, these moments, in particular their ‘talk dirty to me ‘sex scene is tears running down your face hilarious and I believe much of it was improvised which makes it funnier still. However, this relationship does not last. Poor dumb Steven.

When Amy is sent by her boss Dianna, an unrecognisable Tilda Swinton, to do an article on a sport’s doctor Aaron (Hader), her life is about to be completely upended. Aaron is the quintessential nice guy, the kind of man Amy rarely comes into contact with. Aaron likes Amy very much and begins to pursues her which leaves Amy bewildered and confused.

Trainwreck is so funny your sides will hurt from laughing. It is the perfect date movie, the perfect go with your girlfriends movie, the perfect go see it on your own for the third time so you catch all the jokes movie. Or maybe that’s just me 😛

It is funny, endearing, clever, witty and charming all at once. It does have some lulls and my only complaint is it could have shaved at least 20 minutes off the lengthy run time…. but that is my one and only issue with it. If you love Amy, you will love this. If you loved Bridesmaids, you will love this. I can’t wait to see it again.
